Measurement and Evaluation on Indoor Air Quality of Household Units in a Permanent Rental Housing Complex : Comparison by Green Remodeling Status and Residents’ Characteristics

This study aimed to assess indoor air quality in permanent rental housing units and to suggest improvements. Field surveys were conducted in three existing units and three units completed green remodeling(GR) within a complex where GR was in progress. The selection of these households was made in collaboration with the My Home Center and the on-site remodeling project manager. Measurements of indoor air pollutants were taken, alongside resident interviews and observations. The surveys took place from November 23, 2024, to January 1, 2025. The measurement results were compared against Standards of the Indoor Air Quality Management Act, and the influence of GR status and resident characteristics on indoor air quality was analyzed. The findings revealed that the average CO₂concentration per household ranged from 805 to 1,893 ppm, with four households not meeting the standards. The average TVOC concentration per household varied from 240 to 2,024 μg/m³, with three households failing to meet the standards. The average PM10 concentration ranged from 20 to 92 μg/m³, with one household not meeting the standards. Analysis of concentration differences among the surveyed households indicated that CO₂ levels were influenced by ventilation and improved airtightness resulting from GR. TVOC concentrations were associated with GR implementation and the use of incense products. PM10 levels were linked to the usage time of gas cooktops and cooking methods. Therefore, for future construction and GR design of permanent rental housing, it is essential to install heat recovery ventilation systems and automatic control devices for range hoods, as well as to select low-emission materials.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess indoor air quality in permanent rental housing units and to suggest improvements. Field surveys were conducted in three existing units and three units completed green remodeling(GR) within a complex where GR was in progress. The selection of these households was made in collaboration with the My Home Center and the on-site remodeling project manager.
