Influence of Photobiomodulation-Assisted Initial Periodontal Treatment on Salivary Superoxide Dismutase Levels in Grade C Periodontitis: A Randomized Clinical Report
Aim: To investigate the effects of Laser Photobiomodulation Therapy (laser PBM) as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) on the Salivary Superoxide Dismutase Levels (SOD) in Grade C Periodontitis patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 32 patients suffering from stage 3–4 Grade C periodontitis and age-gender-matched healthy individuals participated in this study. Participants were equally divided into two groups: Periodontitis/NSPT (Group I); Periodontitis/NSPT + laser PBM (Group II). In Group II, following NSPT, laser PBM was applied on days 0, 2,7 and 14. Clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and at 3 months. Salivary samples was collected at the beginning of the study, as well as 3 months after periodontal therapy. Results: At the end of this study, the clinical parameters were significantly different in the test Groups (< 0.001). Both groups showed a statistically significant decrease in the salivary values of SOD (P-value < 0.001), with a statistically significant difference was revealed between both of them (P-value < 0.001) at 3 months in favor of group II. Conclusion: The laser PBM assisted NSPT can efficiently modulate the salivary levels of SOD in patients suffering from grade C periodontitis. laser PBM is therefore suggested to encourage protective tissue mechanisms against oxidative stress that occurs in response to periodontal disease for better clinical outcomes.oxidative stress
