Prevalence of sleep bruxism among a group of Egyptian children and its relation to screen-time: A Cross-sectional study (Secondary Analysis)

Background: The current study aims to detect the prevalence of sleep bruxism among a group of Egyptian children and its relation to screen-time.Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed involving parents/ caregivers of 350 children between the ages of 6 to 8 years enrolled in private educational schools in Egypt. Parents were asked to complete the Children Sleep Habit Questionnaire and part of the Health Behavior among School Children Survey through WhatsApp in a soft copy format. Data was then analyzed using the IBM 1 ® SPSS 2 ® Statistics Version 26 for Windows. Results: Data for 350 subjects with Mean age and SD 7. 08 (±1.04) years old revealed that 189 children were reported to grind their teeth during sleep denoting a 54% prevalence of possible sleep bruxism. Television use for 2 hours per day (24.9%) on Weekdays increases the incidence of Sleep Bruxism with statistical (P=0.015) and clinical significance. Conclusion: Sleep bruxism is highly prevalent among 6-8 years old group of Egyptian children with 54% prevalence rate. The increase in the incidence of sleep bruxism exhibits a strong positive correlation with television use during weekdays. Protocol Registration on clinical trials: NCT05784454
