Geospatial Analysis of O Quinze by Rachel de Queiroz: Mapping Literary Spaces with ArcGIS Pro

Abstract: This article examines how digital mapping can function as a form of literary analysis, moving beyond illustration to serve as a critical reading exercise. Although a central challenge of literary maps is that fictional spaces are by definition different from the real world — requiring a negotiation between representation and reality — this study demonstrates how such negotiation can itself produce valuable insights. To illustrate this, the study analyses the Brazilian novel O Quinze (1930) by Rachel de Queiroz, set during the 1915 drought in Ceará. Using ArcGIS Pro to georeference locations of the narrative and map the journeys of the characters, the study highlights the pattern of those displaced by the drought: the wealthy escaped by train with ease, while poor migrants walked nearly the same distance on foot, facing hunger and death. The final maps exposed the unbalanced parallel of social inequality and demonstrated how GIS tools can contribute to literary analysis.
