Beyond Controversy? The Promotion and Early Critical Reception of Sociobiology: The New Synthesis, Fifty Years Later
This meaning focuses on Wilson's written words, and may also cover his other book-length efforts to establish a discipline that encompasses both animal and human social behavior, such as On Human Nature (1978) which he presents as an extension of sociobiology, or his later works written with Charles Lumsden such as Genes Mind and Culture (1981) and its more popular version Promethean Fire (1983), which responded to the criticism that early sociobiology failed to consider the role of mentality and cultural transmission in humans. This shows that even limiting the meaning to one author's understanding and a short time frame of eight years, entails significant shifts in what the term sociobiology can cover.
