Ease the Use of DDI Developing a Set of Tool: The Case of the French National Institute for Demographic Studies

As a prominent producer of demographic data, the French Institue for Demographics Studies (INED) needs to take account of the last development in open science landscape and FAIR principles. Following the implementation of rigorous standards, such as the DDI (Data Documentation Initiative) norm, in data dissemination, real-world scenarios have highlighted the considerable effort required to translate non-standardised documentation into normative frameworks, thereby ensuring that data and metadata adhere to FAIR principles. In response, INED is developing a suite of tools designed to facilitate the work of researchers, engineers, and data officers. This endeavour began with the creation of a metadata gathering platform, built using cutting-edge web technologies, which enables the direct generation of DDI-compliant metadata from survey teams. Future projects will build upon this foundation, including the development of a question database and web-based survey tools, with the ultimate goal of creating a unified, all-in-one survey instrument.
