Time, Integration, and Irreversibility: Toward a Cosmological Grounding of Consciousness and Value
This work presents a descriptive structural formulation addressing time and integration at the observer level, within the broader TII framework. It articulates conditions under which temporal ordering may be coherently described as an effect of irreversible informational accumulation, without invoking subjectivity, agency, judgment, or teleology. Building on the minimal structural commitment of Integrated Information Theory (IIT)—that integrated informational structure may be used as a descriptive correlate of consciousness—this work extends the notion of integration from local, instantaneous systems to historically constrained configurations. Time is treated not as an external parameter or experiential flow, but as a structural descriptor reflecting irreversible distinctions that persist as constraints on subsequent states. Information is defined in purely structural terms, as realized distinctions whose persistence constrains future possibilities. Within this formulation, temporal asymmetry and historical ordering may be described without attributing consciousness, intention, or awareness to cosmological structure. References to value and responsibility are strictly descriptive: actions are said to “matter” only insofar as they participate in irreversible informational accumulation that constrains what may follow. No normative claims, optimization criteria, or prescriptive implications are introduced. This work does not constitute a physical theory, metaphysical doctrine, or ethical framework, and is not intended for empirical operationalization or extension.
