Study on the ridging resistance of ferritic stainless steel processed by asymmetric rolling

Abstract This study investigates the effects of asymmetric rolling (ASR) on the texture evolution and ridging resistance of ferritic stainless steel (FSS) 430. By integrating crystal plasticity finite element modeling (CPFEM) with experimental methods, the mechanical behavior, microstructural evolution and ridging height under various differential speed ratios (DSR = 1.0, 2.5, and 4.0) were systematically analyzed. The results demonstrated that the FSS 430 exhibits the best ridging resistance among the tested DSR conditions, accompanied by a significant reduction in ridging height. When rolled with the DSR of 2.5, deleterious texture components such as the {001} <110> and {114} <110> components are suppressed, whereas favorable orientations including the {111} <110> and {111} <112> components are enhanced. This transition facilitates the transformation of α-fiber into γ-fiber textures, thereby effectively disrupting banded texture clusters and promoting randomized grain orientation distribution. The findings underscore that precise control of the DSR enables effective texture optimization, leading to the enhanced anti-ridging performance in the FSS 430 strips
