Crisis and Disaster Management at Tanta University Libraries: A Real-Life Study and Future Planning
This study aims to analyze the reality of crisis and disaster management at the Central Library of Tanta University from 1993 to 2025. This was achieved by examining available material and human resources, identifying existing plans and policies, and pinpointing the most significant crises and disasters the library faced. The ultimate goal is to propose a comprehensive future plan for crisis management and mitigation. The study employed a case study methodology supported by descriptive-analytical approaches. Various data collection tools were used, most notably personal interviews and checklists. The results revealed the absence of a specialized department or a written crisis management policy within the library, with a complete reliance on the university's Occupational Safety and Health Department. The findings also identified four major crises that affected the library: the January 25 Revolution, which led to a decrease in library visits; the COVID-19 pandemic, which negatively impacted user engagement; an electrical short circuit; and frequent relocations. The study revealed that the library's physical resources are relatively adequate, and its staff is highly qualified and experienced, with some specialists possessing up to 30 years of experience. However, emergency training is limited, with only three employees having completed firefighting courses since 2015.The researcher recommended establishing a specialized crisis and disaster management center within the library, developing an integrated planning and response system, conducting regular training exercises to evaluate and improve performance, and strengthening early warning and prediction mechanisms based on sound scientific principles.
