Evaluation of the effects of injectable platelet-rich fibrin and vitamin Dꝫ injections on the rate of canine retraction, periodontal health, and bone thickness in adults: a two-arm randomized controlled clinical trial

Aim: The objective of this study was to compare the effect of I-PRF and vitamin Dꝫ injections on the rate of canine retraction, periodontal health, and the bone thickness alterations associated with both techniques.Material and methods: Twenty-eight subjects (21 females, 7 males, mean age 20.8 ± 2.7 years) were randomly allocated into the two groups (I-PRF and Vit Dꝫ). In both groups, the experimental side received the injection (I-S) before canine retraction, 1 month, and 2 months after the first injection, and the other side acted as a control (C-S). Impressions were taken every month for 4 months to measure the rate of canine retraction. Periodontal parameters were assessed before and after canine retraction. CBCT images were taken before treatment and after canine retraction to evaluate the labial (L) and palatal (P) bone thickness at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the cementoenamel junction. Results: In both groups, the rate of canine movement was significantly higher (P< 0.001) on the I-S than on the C-S in each month for 4 months. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the pre- and post-retraction values or between the I-S and C-S for all measured periodontal parameters in both groups. Both groups revealed no significant difference in bone thickness alterations between the pre- and post-measurements, except at P3 and P6 on both sides. Conclusion: I-PRF and Vit Dꝫ injections offered a potential role in accelerating canine retraction. The two modalities revealed no impairing effect on periodontal health or bone thickness.
