System and Method for Grid-Responsive Direct Air Capture via Mechanically Agitated Absorption

Abstract Disclosed is a system for removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere while providing load-balancing services to electrical grids. The system couples a variable-load Mechanically Agitated Contactor (MAC) with a baseload power source (e.g., nuclear SMR, geothermal, or industrial waste heat).Unlike passive contacting methods, this system utilizes mechanical shear to maximize the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient (kLa). The system features a control architecture that modulates agitation intensity and power consumption in inverse response to real-time grid pricing or frequency signals, effectively functioning as a "negative load" battery Operating Parameter Ranges To ensure broad prior art coverage, the system is disclosed to operate within the following ranges : Agitator Speed: 100-1200 RPM (variable based on grid signal). Power Input: 0.5-10.0 kW per m³ of reactor volume Sorbent: 1.0 M - 8.0 M NaOH or KOH. pH Range: 12.5 - 14.0. Slurry Solids: 5-40% by weight Regeneration: Thermal calcination or electrochemical regeneration (BPMED) Dedication to the Public This disclosure encompasses any system that combines: (1) variable-intensity mechanical agitation for gas-liquid contacting, (2) alkaline or amine-based CO2 absorption chemistry, (3) control logic responsive to external electrical pricing or grid signals, and (4) thermal integration with a baseload or waste heat source.
