Assessing the Strut-and-Tie Model Suitability for Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams through Nonlinear Finite-Element Analysis
This article explores the application of the strut-and-tie model (STM) in deep beams, emphasizing its effectiveness in simplifying complex structural analysis and design challenges. STM provides a robust framework for addressing concentrated forces and substantial shear demands often present in deep beams, offering engineers a practical and intuitive approach to structural design. Through a comprehensive exploration of the STM based on ACI318 guidelines and its implementation using computer-aided strut-and-tie software, this study emphasizes the importance of proper categorization, placement, and orientation of struts, ties, and nodes. Additionally, finite-element modeling is integrated to provide detailed insights into the structural behavior of deep beams under various loading scenarios. The results obtained demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of the STM in predicting structural responses. This research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of the STM in optimizing structural performance and ensuring safety in concrete structures, paving the way for future developments in deep beam analysis and design.
