High paleolatitude onychodont and rhizodont remains from the upper Famennian (Upper Devonian) Waterloo Farm lagerstätte of South Africa
The upper Famennian, high-paleolatitude Waterloo Farm Lagerstätte from Makhanda/Grahamstown in South Africa yields a rich vertebrate assemblage including lampreys, antiarchs, arthrodires, acanthodians, chondrichthyans, actinopterygians, sarcopterygian fishes, and tetrapods. Here we describe two new sarcopterygian members of the assemblage, a rhizodont and an onychodont, on the basis of fragmentary material. The rhizodont is represented by an articulated shoulder girdle, opercular, preopercular, and several scales. It closely resembles Gooloogongia from the Upper Devonian (probably Famennian) of Australia, but it is not possible to determine whether they are congeneric. The onychodont, represented by a single left maxilla, resembles Strunius from the Frasnian of Europe but is clearly distinct from it. It is described here as Amazinyomakhulu mallinsonia gen. et sp. nov. These are the only records of these two sarcopterygian clades from a high-latitude setting.
