Severe acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2 in a pediatric patient, successfully treated with corticosteroids, remdesivir, and tocilizumab: a case report

The optimal treatment for severe coronavirus disease 2019 in children remains to be fully elucidated. In this case report, we describe a case of severe COVID-19 in a 3-year-old child who developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, which was further exacerbated by pre-existing neurological complications resulting from a prior hypoxic-ischemic insult. Her treatment regimen included systemic corticosteroids, remdesivir, and tocilizumab, and this multimodal approach ultimately led to her recovery to her pre-COVID-19 health status. However, her clinical course toward recovery required a prolonged intensive care stay of approximately 1.5 months. This case underscores the importance of comprehensive measures to protect children from COVID-19 and to ensure the timely and appropriate management of severe pediatric COVID-19 cases.
