Surgical treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability in football players (A continuous series of 17 cases)
This retrospective study included 17 competitive footballers followed at the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health hospitals for lateral ankle instability who underwent peroneus brevis ligament reconstruction according to the Castaing technique between January 2020 and December 2024. The minimum follow-up was one year. Patient evaluation was based on the Karlson score and the Molander and Olerud Ankle Score. Surgical technical details were carefully recorded, as well as any additional treatments and the timeline for returning to sports activities. All patients returned to competitive sports and were satisfied or very satisfied with the surgical results. Overall, the Castaing stabilizing plasty "loosened" of the peroneus brevis still appears today as a preferred intervention in the treatment of external laxity of the ankle and subtalar joint in athletes in general and professional footballers in particular.
