Integrating Composite Materials Throughout the Military Sector: A Review
Composite materials have attracted considerable attention in the defense industry owing to their distinctive properties and wide‐ranging applications. This systematic review examines the current research landscape and recent advancements in the application of composite materials for defense purposes. A structured literature survey was conducted using peer‐reviewed databases, and more than 201 relevant studies were analyzed to provide a comprehensive overview of emerging findings and trends. The review offers comparative analyses of mechanical, ballistic, thermal, and stealth‐related properties of composites. Key outcomes highlight the effectiveness of lightweight armor, enhanced stealth performance in UAVs, corrosion resistance in naval structures, and improved durability of personal protective equipment. At the same time, persistent challenges, such as delamination, high production costs, and sustainability concerns, are critically addressed. Overall, this review emphasizes both the opportunities and limitations of composite materials across defense sectors including aerospace, naval, land‐based systems, and protective gear while underscoring their role in improving performance, durability, and weight efficiency to meet evolving operational requirements.
