The Impact of the Competencies System on the Performance of Hotel Education Students and the Challenges of Its Implementation in Hotel Schools

Tourism education contributes to the development of the tourism industry, through providing human resources skilled at meeting the requirements of that industry. In this respect, the origin of the teaching and learning by competencies approach is the result of the social changes that we have been living in the last decades. Therefore, this research aims to explore the impact of the competencies system on the performance of hotel education students and the challenges of its implementation in hotel schools. This research developed all measurements using scales suggested by previous authors. The researcher followed the comprehensive inventory method. A five-point Likert scale was used to test the attitude of the participants toward research variables. Participants shared in this survey are managers and teachers in hotel schools in Egypt, and they number 326 participants. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS (23) statistical tool. The research found that the competency system helps students to learn and advance. Secondly, the research has demonstrated that the results discovered that headmasters and teachers have students who have a sense of teamwork in the class. On the other hand, the results discovered that the challenges facing the implementation of the competency system in their school are the difficulty of aligning competencies with the current curricula, a lack of training courses, a lack of resources to support the implementation of the competency system, and a lack of financial support for the competency system. Based on the findings, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education should provide financial support to contribute to improving the implementation of the competency system in hotel schools. Finally, hotel school managers should encourage students to express their opinions on the academic curricula they study and the additional curricula they want to study in the future by holding a series of workshops with them.
