Isoquinoline reacts smoothly with ethyl bromopyruvate in the presence of dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates or diaryloylacetylene to produceisoquinoline derivatives in good yields. Quinoline and pyridine react with ethyl bromopyruvate in the presence of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to produce quinolines and indolizine derivatives.
