The Legacy of Oswald James Finney (1880-1942): A Life Story as a Resource for Cultural Heritage Tourism in Alexandria
This paper presents a comprehensive academic study of Oswald James Finney (1880–1942)—a prominent yet previously unexamined figure in the modern history of Alexandria. Adopting a historical and heritage-based approach, the research offers an in-depth analysis of Finney’s life, enterprises, properties, and his social and political influence within the city’s cosmopolitan fabric. As a businessman, media magnate, philanthropist, and cultural patron, Finney played a defining role in shaping Alexandria’s urban and cultural identity during the early twentieth century. The study argues that both his personal narrative and architectural legacy represent valuable resources for the development of heritage tourism and professional tour guiding practices in contemporary Alexandria. Through archival research and interpretive analysis, the paper explores how Finney’s biography and tangible heritage can be incorporated into guided interpretation, narrative-based tour design, and cultural tourism promotion. By unveiling new historical evidence and proposing interpretive applications, this study repositions Oswald Finney as a pivotal figure whose multifaceted legacy can enrich historical understanding, enhance tourist engagement, and strengthen Alexandria’s position as a modern heritage destination.
