Bioinspired CMOS-compatible ultraviolet focal plane array imagers

Ultraviolet (UV) imaging provides irreplaceable optical information in critical fields such as environmental monitoring, biomedicine, industrial detection, astronomical observation, and defense security. Perovskite materials offer solution processability with superior optoelectronic properties, but their UV photodetectors remain confined to single-element configurations due to integration challenges with readout circuits. To overcome this, we develop a bioinspired, complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible UV focal plane array (FPA) imager featuring a MAPbI 3 / ZnO trapping mechanism inspired by bee compound eyes. The architecture employs ZnO nanoparticles to concentrate UV light and a heterojunction that vertically traps photogenerated electrons while laterally separating holes, significantly suppressing carrier recombination. The achieved 640×512 UV FPA imager with a 15 μm pixel pitch exhibits a high detectivity of nearly 10 11 Jones and 99.19% operability. Applications, including pesticide residue detection, UV anti-counterfeiting, and ecological monitoring (e.g., floral UV signature imaging), are demonstrated, validating its high-resolution UV imaging capabilities for practical scenarios.

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) imaging provides irreplaceable optical information in critical fields such as environmental monitoring, biomedicine, industrial detection, astronomical observation, and defense security. Perovskite materials offer solution processability with superior optoelectronic properties, but their UV photodetectors remain confined to single-element configurations due to integration challenges with readout circuits. To overcome this, we develop a bioinspired, complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible UV focal plane array (FPA) imager featuring a MAPbI 3 / ZnO trapping mechanism inspired by bee compound eyes. The architecture employs ZnO nanoparticles to concentrate UV light and a heterojunction that vertically traps photogenerated electrons while laterally separating holes, significantly suppressing carrier recombination. The achieved 640×512 UV FPA imager with a 15 μm pixel pitch exhibits a high detectivity of nearly 10 11 Jones and 99.19% operability. Applications, including pesticide residue detection, UV anti-counterfeiting, and ecological monitoring (e.g., floral UV signature imaging), are demonstrated, validating its high-resolution UV imaging capabilities for practical scenarios.
