Inference in Research: Concepts, Warrants, and Applications in Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods Inquiry

This conceptual paper elaborates on inference as both a process and a product across quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research and examines the warrants that justify inferential claims in each research approach. After an introductory section on the importance of inference in research, the paper clarifies the meaning of inference and distinguishes deductive, inductive, and abductive inference. It then examines inference in quantitative research, focusing on generalization from sample to population and the warrants that underpin causal claims. The fourth section turns to inference in qualitative research, where the emphasis is on meaning-making, interpretive validity, and trustworthiness. Hence, the meaning-making warrants are considered in relation to coding, thematic analysis, and qualitative coding. The paper then discusses inference in mixed methods research in the fifth section, where statistical inference and qualitative interpretation must be integrated to produce meta-inferences, and where additional warrants, such as sampling integration and analytic-integration warrants, are required. A comparison of the warrants across the three research approaches will be presented in the sixth section. The paper concludes by arguing for more explicit training and reporting on inference as a key index of research quality. Methodological transparency about inferential processes and warrants is presented as essential for producing trustworthy knowledge that can inform theory, policy, and practice.
