Bibliometric analysis of mathematical modeling research in renewable energy systems: a focus on biomass and wind energy (2014–2024)

The study aims to provide a bibliometric analysis to evaluate and quantify trends in publications related to renewable energy sources, with a focus on biomass and wind energy. Articles consisting of original and review papers were obtained from the SCOPUS database using R Studio and the VOS viewer tool to analyze the publication trends. Based on the research field, the number of publications per year has increased from 560 in 2014 to 4504 in 2024, with a cumulative total of 19,511 (comprising 18,729 original articles and 782 review papers). This represents an average annual growth rate of about 23%. The increase is a result of global concern about climate change and the negative consequences of fossil fuels. This article’s novelty lies in the Bradford law via core sources considered in the study, a structured investigation of the keywords employed and the theme evolution trend presented across the time period. The bibliometric analysis highlights that the most influential countries and productive in terms of publications were China (5548), India (2290), and the USA (1987), whereas the Energies journal (1049 publications with 21,199 citations) predominated the publication journal of the research topic. With these findings, the study can be beneficial in predicting future scenarios and the participation of researchers and stakeholders in biomass and wind energy research. The study concluded by identifying its limitations and outlining possible areas for future research.
