It is a century-old technique that is gaining application as a self-financing mechanism in the context of dwindling public finance for urbanisation. Goal and Objectives: The objective of the paper is to establish how far land readjustment has traveled as a tool for urban informal settlement upgrading in Africa. Methodology: The methodology consists of a thorough literature review and comparative analysis of the application of land readjustment to urban informal settlement upgrading in African countries. Based on project experiences, the paper explores the key elements that influence the success of land readjustment implementation, indicating the interplay of community participation, financial support, supportive legal and institutional frameworks. Results: The results show land readjustment as a potential alternative tool for financing informal settlement upgrading and creating liveable communities. The study contributes immensely towards a comprehensive understanding of land readjustment applicability and optimization for informal settlement upgrading in the African context.
