The Avian Synsacrum as a High-Resolution Pelvic Accelerometer: A Solid-State Kinetic Chain for Real-Time Terrain Integration

Abstract: Avian species maintain unparalleled postural stability during high-impulse landing flares and terrestrial locomotion, even when distal leg temperatures approach 2°C—a state characterized by a near-zero Avian Flight Neural Conduction Index (AFNCI). This paper integrates established models of thermal-neural decay (Potts, 2025a) and structural mechanosensation (Potts, 2025b) to define the avian synsacrum and lumbosacral organ (LSO) as a High-Speed Bone-Conduction Mechanosensory Organ (HSBCMO). Centrally located within the LSO is the Glycogen Body, a specialized high-density structure. By modeling this body as an inertial proof-mass acting as a biological accelerometer, we demonstrate a "Solid-State" sensory-motor loop that bypasses the "Control Gap" created by the thermal degradation of peripheral nerves, fulfilling the "Thermodynamic Imperative."
