Mapping the landscape of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) through bibliometric and network analysis

In the early 2000s, as industries advanced, the challenges they faced also increased, leading to many project failures as companies were unable to satisfy clients due to schedule delays, cost overruns, and reduced quality. That was the turning point when Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) was introduced to understand complex systems and help industries achieve positive outcomes throughout the project’s lifecycle. Although significant research has been conducted in this domain, a comprehensive study using network and bibliometric analysis within a structured review has not been conducted. The main focus of this study is to shed light on MBSE's existing research patterns and conceptual developments, and to identify eminent countries, authors, and institutions. 7,910 bibliometric data sets using multiple keywords were extracted from the Scopus database for the period 2000 to 2025. Applications such as Excel, PowerPoint, VosViewer, RStudio, and Bibliometrix were exclusively used for generating maps, tables, graphs, and images, which are highlighted in various sections of this report. The findings indicate that China, the United States (US), Germany, and France were seen to dedicate extensive time, resources, and research to exploring various practices and methodologies in MBSE. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the fundamental attributes of MBSE and how it has influenced key global industries that have implemented MBSE principles over the last 25 years. Also, it highlights the future trends and recommendations for future researchers. Finally, the PRISM framework acts as a guide to provide a systematic and structured approach for businesses and organizations to ensure sustainable growth, management planning, and strategic implementation from start to finish.
