Review of the Effectiveness of Ormeloxifene versus Norethisterone Acetate in Women with Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Abstract The well-being of women can be immensely affected by Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB). AUB is defined by irregular menstrual cycles and excessive menstrual bleeding. The treatment of AUB is dependent on the underlying cause. In the drug therapy, Ormeloxifene and Norethisterone acetate are used alternatively and has been studied for their effectiveness in AUB. Original research articles published between 2013 and 2024, comparing effectiveness of Ormeloxifene and Norethisterone in AUB management were reviewed. During the search, 10 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The research publications evaluated the effectiveness of Ormeloxifene and Norethisterone acetate in lowering Pictorial Blood Loss Assessment Chart scores, raising hemoglobin levels, and reducing endometrial thickness. The results of Ormeloxifene were better compared to Norethisterone acetate. In the current review, Ormeloxifene was found to be more effective and better-tolerated drug therapy for managing AUB than Norethisterone acetate. Better safety profile and nonhormonal nature of ormeloxifene makes it better alternate to Norethisterone in AUB management.
