The Underlying Properties Lens and the Source Code Hypothesis: Two Tools for Analyzing Reality

The paper develops two analytical tools for the study of complex phenomena. The first is the underlying properties lens, a heuristic methodology for detecting and structuring cross-domain pattern recurrence, with epistemic discipline distinguishing productive isomorphisms from loose analogies and with anchor in published applications across thermodynamic, quantum, and cross-level cases. The second is the source code hypothesis, a tentative conjecture that recurring patterns reflect organisational principles operating as rules of the game rather than descriptive laws ---constraints on the space of the possible rather than descriptions of evolution. One candidate principle is developed as worked example, local adaptive efficiency, recognisable across many domains of physics under various names and already operating in the published corpus as one of the structural pillars of an alternative ontology. Four operational criteria for distinguishing legitimate candidates from invention are provided. The two parts of the paper are deliberately separable: the lens stands as methodology whether or not the source code hypothesis turns out to be a productive frame. The work is offered as foundation for subsequent development, by the present author or by other researchers who find one or another tool apt to their interests.
