Rethinking Gospel Priority: A Functional–Psychological and Redactional Method

This essay re-examines the methodological foundations behind the dominant consensus of Gospel priority in New Testament studies, particularly the assumption of Markan primacy. Rather than proposing a definitive alternative chronology, the study conducts a historiographical audit of the criteria commonly employed since the nineteenth century—brevity, roughness of style, and presumed primitivity—and argues that these indicators are insufficient when isolated from cognitive, occupational, and community-functional variables. By integrating functional authorship, psychological disposition, and redactional purpose, this essay proposes a complementary analytical framework in which narrative style is treated as a consequence of role, audience, and historical pressure rather than as a linear marker of textual origin. The distinct narrative profiles of Matthew, Luke, Mark, and John are examined not as competing claims to priority, but as differentiated textual responses within an early multi-layered transmission environment that was not exclusively oral. This study does not reject Markan priority, nor does it assert Matthean or Johannine priority. Instead, it argues for methodological restraint and plural criteria, emphasizing that historical intelligibility must precede chronological certainty. The essay is offered as an open methodological contribution intended to expand, rather than replace, existing models of Gospel formation.
