Simple Linear Dc Link Voltage Controller to Improve Transient Response of Pfc Rectifiers Under Stability and Current Quality Constraints

The trade-off between DC link voltage dynamics and AC-side current quality in power factor correction (PFC) rectifiers is well-studied. It has been shown that applying notch filter in series with a typically employed PI regulator (i.e. forming a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{PI}+$</tex> Notch controller) permits DC link voltage dynamics refining without worsening total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid-side current. This work indicates that dropping the integral term of the PI regulator part (i.e. forming a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{P}+$</tex> Notch controller) allows attaining further improvement of PFC rectifiers transient response to step-like load variations without sacrificing the grid-side current THD. On the other hand, it is demonstrated that the system possesses small tolerable average DC link voltage steady-state error (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\sim 1 \%$</tex> under full load). Analytical expressions linking the coefficients of the proposed controller with the above-mentioned performance merits for given DC link capacitance value and mains frequency uncertainty range are revealed in the paper. Simulations results validate the proposed design methodology.
