Integration of a Battery System Into a Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage System and Impact Analysis of Different System Designs and Operating Strategies
Germany's transition to greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045 requires a significant expansion of renewable energy sources and advanced energy storage solutions. Projections show substantial growth in both energy generation and consumption, along with rising solar and wind capacity. However, because solar and wind are weather-dependent and intermittent, storage systems are needed to smooth out supply fluctuations and match generation to demand. Focusing on a hydrogen-based energy storage system, this study investigates potential optimizations by integrating batteries to improve system efficiency, stability, and cost effectiveness. Simulations are used to analyze the impact of different system configurations and operational strategies on design, performance, and economics, providing insights to guide the development of efficient and resilient storage solutions for smoother integration of renewable energy sources into future energy systems.
