A Receção do Federalismo em Portugal no Período Final da Monarquia | The Reception of Federalism in Portugal in the Final Stage of the Monarchy

Following the American Revolution, federalism became one of the topics that most fascinated European intellectuals in the 18th and 19th centuries also due to the pioneering nature of the successful republican experience, which will resonate on this side of the Atlantic. This article explores the characteristics, as well as the way federalism was interpreted, but also the republican idea in Portugal, mainly in the propaganda phase of the republican movement. It is produced an assessment of some of these contributions, ranging from Henriques Nogueira in 1850s to Alves da Veiga at the dawn of the Republic. We notice a progressive slowdown in the reflections on federalism starting in 1890, a moment that coincides with the radicalization of the conspirational actions that led to the establishment of the Republic in 1910, without however ignoring for the time gap in question the theoretical production of a federal model which would extend beyond national borders, but clearly less committed to its domestic implementation as seen in the Constitution enacted the following year.
