The workplace costs of constant Snapchat engagement

Purpose This conceptual paper explores the impact of Snapchat on employee mental health and workplace productivity. It investigates the psychological and behavioral consequences of excessive Snapchat usage, including distraction, digital fatigue, and social comparison. It also examines organizational strategies to mitigate these effects, such as digital wellness programs, policy development, and managerial modeling. The paper aims to provide practical implications for corporate communicators, HR leaders, and managers seeking to foster healthier digital environments. Design/methodology/approach The study employs a narrative literature review approach, synthesizing empirical research and conceptual insights from the fields of organizational behavior, communication, and digital wellness. It builds upon the author’s prior work on the use of Snapchat in the workplace. It incorporates theoretical perspectives such as uses and gratifications theory, self-determination theory, and internal relationship management. Key findings are organized into thematic categories, supported by a visual strategy table to guide implementation. Findings Snapchat’s unique features, including disappearing content, gamification, and real-time validation, create habitual usage cycles that can negatively impact employee attention, well-being, and task performance. These dynamics are particularly problematic in hybrid and tech-driven environments. The paper identifies evidence-based strategies for organizations to manage this challenge, including internal communication policies, time management training, role modeling by managers, and mental health support programs. Originality/value This paper is among the first to explore the specific organizational implications of Snapchat usage, moving beyond generalized social media analysis to examine its behavioral design and workplace impact. It offers a fresh perspective by integrating theories of digital wellness, internal communication, and employee advocacy to propose actionable interventions. By framing Snapchat as both a workplace distraction and a potential strategic tool, the paper introduces a balanced, future-focused approach to managing employee social media use. Including a practical strategy table enhances its value for researchers and practitioners.
