A Successful Pregnancy and Delivery in a Patient With Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy and Marked Lumbosacral Plexus Enlargement
ABSTRACT We report a case of a successful pregnancy and delivery in a patient with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) and marked lumbosacral plexus enlargement. A 34‐year‐old woman with a 19‐year history of multifocal CIDP became pregnant. Although she was asymptomatic except for absent tendon reflexes, a pelvic MRI performed at week 26 of gestation demonstrated marked enlargement of the sacral plexus and femoral nerves. At week 35 of gestation, she began to experience a tingling sensation in her right leg, leading her and her husband to choose an elective cesarean section. She delivered a healthy baby at week 38 without exacerbation of the symptoms throughout her pregnancy or postpartum period. Nerve damage is a potential risk during pregnancy and delivery for female CIDP patients with enlarged nerves. MRI can be a useful tool for evaluating nerve enlargement in the pelvic region.
