The Role of Inflammation in Lipid Dysregulation among Women with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Introduction: Low grade chronic inflammation has a deep- rooted relationship with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), responsible for insulin resistance and metabolic complications. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is an important inflammatory biomarker. This study aimed to assess hs-CRP and lipid profile in women with T2DM. Methodology: This is an observational case-control study, conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Ajmer in which a total of 130 subjects were compared against 130 healthy controls. Estimation of serum fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TG) were assessed by automatic analyser and hs-CRP estimation was done by chemiluminescence. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS-29 software. Results: Fasting bllod glucose (FBS0, HbA1c, serum hs-CRP level, serum total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides and VLDL were found to be significantly raised in the group with T2DM (p < 0.001). Serum HDL levels were significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the group with T2DM. Conclusion: High levels of hs-CRP and dyslipidemia exist in females with T2DM. Serum hs-CRP assay can be used as a screening test to assess and identify at-risk patients (dyslipidemia, T2DM, obesity, metabolic syndrome, CVD, hypertension). Women with raised serum levels of hs-CRP should be advised to undergo relevant investigations to screen for cardiovascular pathologies.
