Invisible but indispensable: Systems librarians as the hidden drivers of library transformation

This paper explores the evolving role of systems librarians within the context of digital transformation in contemporary libraries, focusing on their responsibilities, institutional significance, and future relevance. It aims to provide insight into how systems librarians contribute to the development and sustainability of digital infrastructure, information access, and service innovation, particularly as libraries adapt to increasingly complex technological demands. Employing a secondary research methodology, the paper synthesises scholarly literature, professional reports, and case evidence from both global and Nigerian contexts to examine emerging practices and identify critical challenges. The findings reveal that systems librarians are central to the functionality and strategic direction of modern library services, with roles that now encompass systems integration, data governance, user experience optimisation, and cross-functional collaboration. However, their work often remains under-recognised within institutional frameworks, and many operate without clear professional pathways or adequate training support, especially in developing regions. Based on these insights, the study recommends the formal inclusion of systems librarians in leadership structures, investment in continuous professional development, and the establishment of standardised role definitions to ensure that libraries remain adaptive, innovative, and equitable in the digital era.
