Using Stones for Bridges, Not Barriers: How Effective Dialogue Can Restore Harmony between Religion and Evolution
Abstract After participating in a scientific conference celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the Scopes trial and the noteworthy advancements in evolutionary science since then and then attending a nonscientific exhibit opposing evolutionary science, we came to some key observations about communication’s role in the ongoing conflict between evolution and religious fundamentalism. In this article, we begin with the history of the conflict. We then highlight the research surrounding the teaching of evolution in ways that reduce conflict with Christian worldviews. Finally, we highlight the research on science communication and use this knowledge to make recommendations on how scientists can best communicate about evolution to the public so that scientists build bridges instead of barriers.
