Congenital Bilateral Bipartite Trapezoid: A Case Report and Literature Review
Abstract Congenital bilateral bipartite trapezoid is an extremely rare anomaly of the carpal bones. We present a case of a 32-year-old man with bilateral bipartite trapezoid. Pronated oblique radiograph demonstrated division of the trapezoid into palmar and dorsal segments. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed bilateral symmetry of the bipartite trapezoid without degenerative changes or bone marrow edema. Owing to its rarity, literature on this condition remains limited. Only three articles were identified, including one cadaveric study and two case reports. Our study provides detailed imaging data and offers additional insight into this uncommon entity. This case highlights the diagnostic value of multiplanar wrist radiographs in detecting subtle carpal lesions. Clinicians should accurately recognize this condition and carefully differentiate it from an isolated trapezoid fracture or fracture nonunion to avoid unnecessary treatment.
