Ǝ-Trace — The Irreversible Fixation of Meaning: Where Observation Fixes Meaning and Responsibility
This paper introduces Ǝ-Trace, a structural framework for understanding how meaning and responsibility become irreversibly fixed in both AI systems and human decision-making. Conventional Explainable AI (XAI) approaches rely on post-hoc explanations that attach reasons after decisions have already been made. This paper argues that such approaches cannot structurally guarantee responsibility or meaning, because they lack an irreversible causal fixation point. Within the EVΛƎ framework (E-Origin, V-Echo, Λ-Turbulence, Ǝ-Trace), this work formalizes Ǝ-Trace as the causal imprint generated at the precise moment a selection (Λ) becomes bound to the external world through observation (Ǝ). At this point, a decision transitions from a reversible internal process into an irreversible historical fact. The paper demonstrates that responsibility arises only at the level of design, not explanation. It further introduces Design-by-Transparency as an architectural principle in which transparency and accountability are embedded directly into the decision-generation process, rather than appended after the fact. By extending this structure to human cognition, AI system design, and governance, the paper provides a unified framework for understanding responsibility as a structural consequence of irreversible decision-making. The implications extend to AI governance, auditing, and social infrastructure, offering a design-based foundation for trust and accountability in AI systems.
