Impact of Architectural Design on Household Relocation Decisions Amid Rapid Urban Expansion

Rapid urbanization in Iraqi Kurdistan, notably in Sulaymaniyah, has markedly influenced residential architecture and social dynamics since 2003. This study examines how urban growth impacts residents' decisions to relocate, emphasizing the relationships among architectural quality, neighbourhood cohesion, and location satisfaction. A survey of 540 residents from various neighbourhoods was conducted, with data analyzed through structural equation modelling and factor analysis. The results reveal a significant positive correlation between high-quality architectural design and residents' willingness to move. Conversely, strong neighbourhood social ties and location satisfaction negatively affect relocation intentions. These insights highlight the critical need for urban planners and policymakers to balance architectural innovation, community bonds, and strategic location planning. By doing so, sustainable urban growth can be achieved, enhancing residents' quality of life. The study provides valuable recommendations for addressing urban expansion challenges, offering practical guidance to foster integrated and sustainable development in rapidly growing cities like Sulaymaniyah.
