Dissipative Vacuum Geometry and the Emergence of Time, Causality, and Cosmological Order

The origin of time, causality, and irreversible cosmological evolution remains a central unresolved problem in theoretical physics. While the fundamental equations of quantum field theory are time-reversal invariant and generate unitary dynamics, the observed universe exhibits entropy production, irreversible structure formation, and a pronounced arrow of time. In this work, we develop a cosmological framework based on dissipative quantum field theory in which dissipation is incorporated canonically through a doubling of degrees of freedom (Celeghini, Rasetti, & Vitiello, 1992; Vitiello, 1995). As a result, cosmic evolution is described not as unitary motion within a single Hilbert space, but as irreversible motion through a manifold of unitarily inequivalent vacuum representations (Vitiello, 2007). We introduce a minimal set of vacuum coordinates Θ(t) associated with three unavoidable cosmological drivers: expansion-induced squeezing, infrared mode suppression due to finite horizons, and entropy backreaction (Alfinito, Manka, & Vitiello, 1997). Using a time-dependent variational projection onto the manifold of coherent SU(1,1) vacua, we derive explicit dynamical equations for these coordinates, including dissipation, relaxation toward time-dependent reference configurations, and stochastic fluctuations (McLachlan, 1964; Mori, 1965; Zwanzig, 1961). Within this framework, the Big Bang is reinterpreted as an initial condition in representation space rather than as a spacetime singularity, the arrow of time emerges from entropy-driven semigroup evolution, and causality arises from the ordered sequence of vacuum representations. Cosmological phase transitions are described as bifurcations of an effective free-energy landscape on the vacuum manifold, and genuinely cyclic or Big-Bounce cosmologies are shown to be incompatible with dissipative vacuum dynamics. The resulting picture provides a unified, dynamical foundation for time, causality, and cosmological order grounded in dissipative quantum field theory and vacuum geometry.
