Quality control mechanisms in Arabic book publishing: Evidence from Kano State, Nigeria

Books are fundamental to the transmission of knowledge, the development of literacy, and the preservation of culture. Arabic publications are essential in Islamic contexts for the preservation of religious, legal, and literary traditions. Kano State, Nigeria, has traditionally been a centre for Islamic scholarship, witnessing the transition of Arabic book publishing from manuscript creation to mechanised printing. The Arabic publishing sector in Nigeria, while significant, is marginalised within the larger book industry due to outdated production practices, insufficient institutional support, and the lack of standardised editorial frameworks. The identified limitations undermine linguistic precision, theological accuracy, and production quality, consequently impacting the sector's role in education and cultural development. This research evaluated the quality control mechanisms utilised by Arabic book publishers in Kano State. A qualitative methodology was employed utilising a cross-case study design that included five registered publishing firms affiliated with the Islamic Book Sellers and Publishers Association of Kano State (IBSAPAK). Data were collected through structured, face-to-face interviews with managers of these firms and analysed using narrativebased techniques to identify recurring themes and gaps in quality assurance. The findings indicate that quality control measures encompass manuscript evaluation and editing, design and layout, pre-printing checks, printing processes, post-printing verification, and distribution oversight. The mechanisms demonstrate attempts to protect textual integrity; however, differences in implementation reveal fragmented practices and a lack of standardisation. The research indicates that Arabic publishing in Kano demonstrates resilience; however, it necessitates structural reforms, technological investments, and institutional collaboration to improve sustainability and conform to global publishing standards. Recommendations encompass regulatory oversight, capacity development, digital innovation, and enhanced professional networks.
