Assessing the role of staff attitudes in shaping service delivery outcomes in university libraries in Edo State, Nigeria

University libraries are essential institutions that support the academic and research activities of both students and faculty. They provide access to offer access to various collections of books, journals, databases, multimedia and other resources. It has however been observed that majority of services provided by most university libraries are below the requirement of users. This may be as a result of poor attitude displayed by some library staff towards users in university libraries. This study thus examines assessing the role of staff attitude in shaping service delivery outcomes in university libraries in Edo State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design of the correlational type was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all 207 library personnel in the six (6) university libraries in Edo State, Nigeria, which is a combination of a federal, state and private university libraries. Total enumeration technique was adopted due to the manageable population size for the researcher. Results revealed that library staff displayed positive attitude towards users, and some of these attitudes include: willingness to ensure users’ satisfaction (???? = 3.37), willingness to communicate effectively to users about available resources in the library (???? = 3.34) and feeling of fulfillment while helping users access relevant information (???? = 3.34 Std. dev.= 0.829). The library staff's attitude and dedication to promoting the use of library resources have a big impact on the caliber of services offered. Nonetheless, it was suggested that university libraries support and educate library staff to continue being willing to guarantee patron happiness.
