D3.1 - FAIRification Framework

One of the objectives of the FAIR2ADAPT project is to improve the accessibility, interoperability, and reuse of climate adaptation knowledge by applying the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles to digital objects, resulting in FAIR Digital Objects. While the FAIR principles provide a strong conceptual framework for data sharing, their practical implementation remains challenging due to the multiple possible implementation approaches and the level of technical expertise required. Furthermore, their application to other types of digital objects, such as software, workflows, and publications, is not always clear. This deliverable presents the FAIRification Framework developed within FAIR2ADAPT, adapted to the climate change adaptation domain. The framework builds on existing FAIRification approaches, in particular the Three Point FAIRification Framework (3PFF), and extends them by reducing human intervention through the orchestration of multiple FAIR enabling services available within the project. Its objective is to support communities, represented by different case studies, in transforming digital resources into machine-actionable, interoperable, and reusable FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs) with reduced manual effort. This deliverable reviews existing technical approaches for implementing FAIR Digital Objects, with particular attention to nanopublications and RO-Crates. Based on this analysis, FAIR2ADAPT adopts RO-Crates, extended through community specific profiles, as the primary mechanism for implementing FDOs. In addition, nanopublications will be used to add complementary information to the profiles, such as scientific hypotheses, claims, and related assertions. The core of this deliverable describes the FAIR2ADAPT FAIRification Framework, including its lifecycle methodology based on the software lifecycle, and the set of FAIR enabling services that support FAIR assessment, metadata extraction, semantic enrichment, knowledge representation, and publication. The interactions between these services are described in a FAIRification Plan, which is implemented through a FAIRification pipeline. This pipeline orchestrates the execution of the services and is designed to be adaptable to different types of resources and community needs. Finally, the deliverable outlines the implementation of the framework across the FAIR2ADAPT case studies, demonstrating how FAIR Implementation Plans are derived from community requirements and executed using the proposed services.
