Bilateral, Focal Autoimmune Thalamitis: A Clinical Case Suggesting a Potential Role for Viruses in the Development of Human Consciousness
This case report describes a rare instance of isolated, bilateral autoimmune thalamitis in a woman following a viral exposure, presenting as profound cognitive regression. Through detailed clinical and MRI analysis, it argues against vascular causes and proposes molecular mimicry as the mechanism. The author uses this unique case to speculate on a provocative evolutionary hypothesis: that viral genetic material may have fundamentally contributed to the development of the human thalamus and consciousness, suggesting autoimmune diseases could be a legacy of this ancient relationship.
