AN1: A Post-Transformer Hybrid Architecture for Deterministic and Adaptive Intelligence

This technical note presents AN1, a post-transformer hybrid architecture for deterministic and adaptive intelligence. AN1 separates reasoning, memory, planning, and safety enforcement from neural language models, replacing dense statistical computation with explicit causal state, constant-time symbolic execution, and protocol-governed routing. The architecture consists of a deterministic Causal Core responsible for decision-making, memory management, counterfactual reasoning, and safety guarantees, alongside an optional Neuro-Symbolic Lobe used only for ambiguity resolution, language interpretation, and creative synthesis. A routing layer dynamically selects execution modes based on task intent and risk, allowing neural models to remain peripheral and non-authoritative. The paper details the architectural design, execution model, and validation methodology, and reports results from a structured internal protocol suite covering reasoning, identity persistence, counterfactual simulation, infinite-context handling, safety enforcement, computational efficiency, and economic implications for large-scale inference systems. Comparative analysis is provided against transformer-based, compressed-state, and reactive retrieval architectures. AN1 is presented as a functional drop-in replacement for transformer-based agents from a user and developer perspective, while operating on a fundamentally different computational substrate. Transformer models may be used when appropriate, but are no longer the locus of reasoning, memory, or decision-making. This document is intended as an architectural disclosure and technical reference for researchers, engineers, and system designers exploring post-transformer approaches to scalable, high-assurance artificial intelligence. Author’s Note (December 2025): This document represents the initial disclosure of the AN1 architecture and validation protocols. A revised and clarified architectural presentation is available in AN1 v2.0, which formalizes the dual-substrate model and removes earlier hybrid framing.
