From Silicon Valleys to Superpowers: The US–China Tech Rivalry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

ABSTRACT This article investigates the growing tech rivalry between the United States and China in artificial intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on recent developments in the domain. It analyzes China's rapid pace of development with different DeepSeek models, despite notable export controls and semiconductor restrictions from the US. The study also compares the strengths and weaknesses of AI in the US and China, and thus discusses how the superpowers compete in this realm. Using neorealist and techno‐nationalist lenses and employing a qualitative analysis of secondary data, the study delineates the diverse approaches to AI development between the two superpowers. Based on the findings, the study notes that while the US maintains advantages in fundamental research and advanced infrastructure, China's approach and rapid commercialization strategies have enabled significant advances, predominantly in AI deployment and practical applications. This article concludes by arguing that this tech competition transcends mere corporate rivalry, sparking a pivotal contest for global leadership in the digital age with far‐reaching implications for political‐economic developments and international power dynamics.
