Comparative Analysis of Disease Progression Patterns of Rice Bakanae Disease among Cultivars

This study investigated the temporal progression of bakanae disease in three susceptible rice cultivars: Odae, Junam, and Chucheong. Although higher initial seed infection rates increased final disease incidence, the dynamics of symptom development were distinctly cultivar-dependent. Chucheong was characterized by a high proportion of tiller death in the early stages, followed by an increase in latency. Junam showed a steady accumulation of both tiller and whole plant death throughout the season. Odae exhibited a unique pattern where latent infections rapidly increased and were maintained in the later growing stages. These findings reveal that even among susceptible cultivars, distinct temporal patterns exist, suggesting that cultivar-specific traits beyond simple susceptibility govern disease progression. This highlights the necessity of developing targeted management strategies.
