Prosthetic Management of Mucormycosis with a Definitive Obturator Using Precision Attachment and Hybrid Technique: A Case Report with Speech Analysis
A BSTRACT Hemimaxillectomy frequently results in significant anatomical, esthetic, and functional impairments, crucially affecting the capacity of patients to carry out daily tasks and, overall, their quality of life. The implementation of a definitive obturator is essential for restoring oral and nasal functions, as well as improving speech, mastication, and facial esthetics through effective prosthetic management. A hybrid technique was employed, where the crowns and metal framework were fabricated digitally using intraoral scanning and computer-aided design (CAD), ensuring precise fit and accuracy. At the same time, the impression of the defect was recorded manually to capture intricate anatomical details. The final prosthesis was then conventionally fabricated, integrating both digital advancements and conventional techniques for optimal function and aesthetics. This case report describes the comprehensive prosthodontic management of a partially edentulous patient who underwent hemimaxillectomy surgery because of mucormycosis. It emphasizes the planning, fabrication, and fit of a custom metal framework with digitally manufactured CAD-computer-aided manufacturing surveyed crowns and precision attachments. Finally, a series of pre- and postobturator placement speech and nasometry analyses were carried out to demonstrate the improvement of speech function.
