ABSTRACT: This paper provides a comprehensive examination of Su Dongpo (Su Shi), focusing on his life, literary and artistic achievements, personal character, and cultural legacy. Through a systematic analysis of his poetry, prose, culinary anecdotes, family life, and philosophical outlook, it portrays a towering figure who transcended the realms of literature, art, and thought. Despite a career marred by political setbacks and repeated exiles, Su's resilient and transcendent temperament, his innovative and unrestrained literary style, and his synthesis of Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought established him as one of the most compelling and "modern" figures in Chinese cultural history. The study also examines selected folk legends and historical accounts, aiming to balance scholarly rigor with popular narrative, thereby offering a multidimensional perspective on his life, tastes, and enduring spiritual heritage. In the preface of this publication, the three authors jointly present their two original poems titled "White Hair Like Green Plums". These paired poems commemorate the editors' friendship of more than sixty years and pay homage to Su Dongpo's literary tradition of placing twin poems side by side. An additional original postface poem, "In Memory of Lay Buddhist Su Dongpo" by Lawrence K. Wang is also included.
