A study of hematological profile of colorectal carcinoma patients and its correlation with histopathological parameters in a tertiary care hospital in West Bengal
Background: Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide and is associated with a high mortality rate due to its rapid progression. Hematological tests are one of the most commonly and frequently done investigations throughout the course of illness, due to its easy availability and cost effectiveness. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to study the hematological profile of CRC patients and assess its correlation with histopathological parameters. Materials and Methods: A cross- sectional study was done with 72 CRC patients. The blood samples of all the study subjects were run through automated hematology analyzers and complete blood count were obtained. The CRC specimens were grossed, examined microscopically, and reported according to the college of American pathologists protocol. Results: All the available information was meticulously documented in tables and charts and statistical analysis was done by Chi-square test using the Statistical Package for the Social Science version 27.0. Conclusion: There is a strong correlation between hematological and histopathological parameters in CRC patients. Lymphopenia, high red cell distribution width, anemia, and platelet activation proved to be associated with more severe disease. Hematological ratios and indexes can act as a guiding tool for proper screening, diagnosis, prognosis, and management of the CRC patients.
